LL Bean-inspired sea-glass mirror
The other day I was flipping through an LL Bean catalog we received in the mail that showcased their home décor products. There were some adorable items in there, but the one thing that I saw and immediately felt that I must have it urge for was this gorgeous sea-glass mirror:
Isn't it absolutely adorable? What's not beautiful about this item is the price - a whopping $129 plus tax and shipping. Talk about sticker shock!
Crafty lady that I am, I knew I could make something just as nice with basic craft store supplies so off I went. I found a 12" square mirror at JoAnn for $6.99 (slightly smaller than the L.L. Bean version which is 15.5") but there was no sea-glass to be found there or at Wal-Mart (though both places did have some lovely glass pebbles that would have worked just as nicely). I ended up finding the sea-glass at Dollar Tree of all places - they had 12 oz. bags for only $1 each! I used 2 bags of blue and 1 bag of white. To bond the sea-glass to the mirror I used E6000 which I had on hand. I liked that it wasn't an instant set because it allowed me to move the glass pieces around a bit before settling on their final placement.
Here's my finished product. I love it!
This project took me only about an hour once I had all the materials, though I let it sit for about 2 days before hanging, just to make sure the glue was set. The total cost of my project... $10.84 including tax. That's a whopping $129.13 less than the L.L. Bean version, and I didn't even figure in the cost of shipping! I hung my new mirror on a wall in my kitchen. What do you think?

Sorry new to the diy world but what is E6000?
ReplyDeleteE6000 is a type of glue, kind of like Super Glue but thicker. It can be found at most craft stores. You could probably use hot glue, but I have a feeling that would not stick to the mirror completely.
